Fitting a log burner in a Manchester home

Plenty of Manchester’s older houses were built with a fireplace in most rooms, and many were boarded or bricked up decades ago. Reopening one is usually very doable, but older properties bring a few things we need to look at first:

  • Unlined or tired chimneys

Most older flues need a new liner before a stove can go in safely, which is why we include a 10m flue liner as standard. If you need a larger flue liner, see our flue liner replacement service.

  • Narrow chimney breasts

Terraced houses often have shallower openings, which affects the stove size and chamber finish you can choose.

  • Shared chimney stacks

Terraces and semis often share a stack with next door, so the condition of the stack and pots matter as much as the opening.

  • No chimney at all

Newer homes and extensions can still have a stove, using a twin-wall flue system that runs up the outside of the building.

Log burner rules in Manchester

The whole of Manchester has been a smoke control area since 1985, under the Clean Air Act. This means your chimney can’t give off smoke unless you’re burning an authorised fuel or using an exempt appliance.

That doesn’t mean you can’t live your log burner dreams. Every stove we fit is Defra-approved, which makes it an exempt appliance, so you can burn wood as long as you stick to the fuel the manufacturer specifies and use properly dried logs.

Outside the city boundary, each borough council sets its own smoke control rules, so if you live in Stockport, Trafford, or Bolton, for example, it’s worth checking with your own council - we’ll talk this through with you before you choose a stove.
