A common question we often get is whether or not you can have a woodburning stove if you don’t have a chimney. While gas and electric fireplaces are an option, for many people nothing will ever beat the ambience created through a woodburning stove. Luckily, it is possible to achieve this even if you don’t have a chimney!
What happens if I have no chimney?
If you live in a modern home and are wanting to add a little character, a woodburning stove is a fantastic option. The solution to no chimney is something called a twin wall flue system which is installed through the roof or wall of your home. Despite there being a little more work involved, it’s still a cost-effective way to enjoy the many benefits of having a woodburning stove.
What is a twin wall flue system?
Twin wall flue systems are key to fitting a stove without a chimney. Essentially, it’s a series of connectable pipes that carry the fumes from your stove outside, acting in a similar way to a traditional chimney.
To keep the temperature warm enough inside the flue, the stainless steel pipes are wrapped in thick insulation and surrounded by a second outer tube. Ensuring the right temperature is important to allow the fumes to draw through the pipe and deposit outside.
The location of your stove
There are a few different options available when it comes to installing a woodburning stove with no chimney. The first thing to think about is where exactly in your home/room you want the woodburner to go. A twin wall flue system can be installed both internally and externally, with both having their benefits and drawbacks.
If it’s fitted internally, the new flue will pass through your home and out through the roof.
Fitting the flue externally means it will be less visible inside your home. Essentially an external flue will pass through the wall and then be fixed to the outside of your house. Think carefully about where this will be, as you may not want the flue system fixed to the front of your property. An external flue can have a maximum of four bends which can sometimes limit the choice of location.
